Identifying Late Effects of Cancer (and its Treatments) with Potential Impact on Work

Many people continue to experience complaints long after cancer treatment. It is important to remain alert to these late effects, including in the workplace, as they can have a significant impact on someone’s ability to work.

This summary (in Dutch) highlights the most important “red flags” that may indicate possible late effects of cancer (treatment) with consequences for work. [Link to PDF]

The red flags are drawn from the guideline Late Effects of Cancer (Treatment) and Work , which provides insights and recommendations for occupational experts (arbeidsdeskundigen). This guideline was developed by Centrum Werk Gezondheid in collaboration with the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and the Dutch Federation of Cancer Patient Organisations (NFK), commissioned by the Occupational Experts Knowledge Centre (AKC).

C2M Final note: Lessons learned

Workers spend more time seated and for longer periods of time when working from home than those working in the office

The European research project Click2Move, led by UVic-UCC, shows the importance of breaking up long periods of time spent seated during working hours with strategies to promote physical exercise and health

The research, which was carried out with 163 workers in four European countries, was based on the co-creation and use of wristband devices and a mobile application

The company Anthesis, based in Manlleu (Osona), was Spain's participant in the project

In Memoriam Horst Kloppenburg *17th November 1943 †15th August 2023

Horst Kloppenburg died on the 15th of August 2023 in his home city of Essen.

He was principal administrator in the European Commission (until 2014 known as the Directorate-General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO), and responsible and active in the field of health promotion. Health promotion and disease prevention are included within the public health strategies of the EU to improve the health status of populations or relevant sub-groups.

There have been many European policies in this field. Horst’s strength was to see that European policies can only successfully implemented by the creation of stable networks in which members can learn from and support each other. In his professional career he pushed forward the establishment of a number of Europe-wide networks. One of his children was the establishment of the European Network for Workplace Health Promotion in 1996.

WHP aims to introduce the ‘healthy organisation’ as an important priority on the agenda of all relevant stakeholders from the workplace and beyond. With Horst Kloppenburg we have lost a person who was an active driver in the field of health promotion!

This Photo shows him with the European members of the ENWHP and of WHO after the foundation in 1996. All members of the board of ENWHP mourn the passing of Horst Kloppenburg and are grateful for the boost and support that he gave to the health of workers throughout the EU.

WHO new FACTSHEET - The vicious cycle of tobacco use and mental illness – a double burden on health

A new factsheet launched by WHO examines the intricate connections between tobacco use and mental illness. The factsheet stresses the urgent need to address these connections: 2 in 3 people with severe mental health conditions are current smokers, which has an enormous impact on health. Reducing smoking among people with mental illness is identified as the single most effective action for reducing the gap in life expectancy.

A double burden on health

The factsheet identifies a feedback loop between mental ill health and tobacco use. Mental illness makes people twice as likely to use tobacco and, at the same time, tobacco makes people more vulnerable to mental health concerns.

The relationship between tobacco usage and mental health is complex and eye-opening. Some figures released in the factsheet are shocking – people with severe mental health conditions die on average 15–20 years prematurely, with tobacco cited as one of the main causes of death.

The impact of tobacco use is not limited to mortality rates, but also affects quality of life and attempts to cope with poor mental health. For example, tobacco reduces the effectiveness of certain medications for mental health. Conversely, quitting tobacco can allow people on certain antipsychotic medications to reduce the dosage by up to 25%.

Taking a myth-busting approach, the factsheet is packed with striking statistics drawn from up-to-date research. It foregrounds how essential it is for public health systems to support people with mental illness to quit tobacco. In addition to benefitting physical health, cessation can lead to numerous improvements in mental health, such as reduced levels of depression, anxiety and stress; enhanced mood; and even improved symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
