Identifying Late Effects of Cancer (and its Treatments) with Potential Impact on Work

Many people continue to experience complaints long after cancer treatment. It is important to remain alert to these late effects, including in the workplace, as they can have a significant impact on someone’s ability to work.

This summary (in Dutch) highlights the most important “red flags” that may indicate possible late effects of cancer (treatment) with consequences for work. [Link to PDF]

The red flags are drawn from the guideline Late Effects of Cancer (Treatment) and Work , which provides insights and recommendations for occupational experts (arbeidsdeskundigen). This guideline was developed by Centrum Werk Gezondheid in collaboration with the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and the Dutch Federation of Cancer Patient Organisations (NFK), commissioned by the Occupational Experts Knowledge Centre (AKC).

C2M Final note: Lessons learned

Workers spend more time seated and for longer periods of time when working from home than those working in the office

The European research project Click2Move, led by UVic-UCC, shows the importance of breaking up long periods of time spent seated during working hours with strategies to promote physical exercise and health

The research, which was carried out with 163 workers in four European countries, was based on the co-creation and use of wristband devices and a mobile application

The company Anthesis, based in Manlleu (Osona), was Spain's participant in the project

Application procedure

Applying for an award begins with organisations undertaking a self-assessment of their activities using the readiness screening tool in order to assess whether they are ready for a formal assessment of their workplace health practice. If the organization can answer YES to 16 or more questions, then it may be eligible to apply for an award.

Readiness Screening Tool

					     16 or more YES

Once an applicant organisation believes that they are ready to apply for an award, they can enter the assessment process through applying online for recognition.

The next stage of the procedure is to submit written evidence to support and document the workplace health activities that they engage in.

The ENWHP Assessment team will review this evidence and respond to the applicant with a set of clarification questions should these be needed. Advice may also be given at this stage.

Assuming that the company passes the threshold, an Award will be made at the Bronze level.

Employers that wish to apply for higher levels of the Award must begin by applying for a Bronze level Award.

If you wish to apply for an award, please fill in the Application form

European Workplace Health Promotion Accreditation System - EWHPAS

The ENWHP Accreditation System aims to promote good practice in line with ENWHP principles and approach to workplace health. Employers can apply to have their workplace health practice assessed by experts in the field and can receive support and advice from these experts to help them improve their practice. Employers can also achieve national and international public recognition for their good practice through the publicity provided by the ENWHP.

What is it?

ENWHP have launched a new Europe-wide accreditation system for WHP. It answers a need that has become more apparent over recent years where accreditation systems are not available in every country and where workplaces are looking for recognition of their efforts in the field. For some, they seek consistent accreditation standards across national borders, while for others, international recognition of their activities is important.

The ENWHP Accreditation System has been developed by experts from 3 European countries with inputs also made by experts from a further 6 Member States.

The SHIFT2HEALTH project aims to develop nutritional and behavioural strategies for people with high risk of obesity caused by circadian disruption.

The strategies developed are based on an advanced understanding of:

				- the underlying biological pathways, particularly regarding the microbiome, metabolic health and inflammation

				- the identification of pre-obesity biomarkers

				- the expectations, wishes and needs of shift workers

To achieve these aims, SHIFT2HEALTH is set up as a 5-year project, solving necessary bottlenecks such as a comprehensive understanding of biological pathways, identification of pre-obesity biomarkers, analysing obesity stigma, stress, work-life balance and circadian rhythm disruption, setting up pilots to assess the effectiveness of obesity management strategies or developing recommendations and guidelines for what constitutes an appropriate healthy diet for different age and health groups.

Healthy Work in an Ageing Europe

5th Initiative (2004 - 2006)

The 5th ENWHP Initiative focussed on strategies that enable employees to remain longer in gainful employment. These strategies reflected the differing policy and legal frameworks in place across Europe.

Objectives

To improve workplace health and well-being of the ageing workforce

To increase awareness of all stakeholders to recognise the needs of an ageing workforce and to respond to the impacts of an ageing workforce on workplace health and well-being.

To identify, analyse, document and disseminate models of good practice for workplace health promotion in the context of an ageing workforce (report here).

To develop a toolbox for promoting workplace health and well-being for ageing workers (report here).

Description/Methodology

Demographic change, and in particular an ageing and shrinking labour market, is presenting new challenges to enterprises and social security systems in Europe. The working age population in the European Union is due to fall by 20.8 million between 2005 and 2030. At the same time, the proportion of older people in employment will increase markedly, exacerbated by the pushing back of retirement ages, and as the number of younger employees entering the workforce decrease significantly due to lower birth rates.

At present, however, employees over 45 years of age are often perceived as too old for a job, yet this age group will very soon represent the major part of the workforce. In the future, enterprises in Europe will depend more than ever on qualified, motivated and, above all, healthy employees. Government’s also having a significant interest in this, as the continued viability of social security systems requires employees to remain in employment later into life.

Main findings

A large end of project conference attracted delegates from across Europe, “Healthy work in an ageing Europe,” with the findings being pulled together in a conference report. Three themes were considered:

Lifestyle management to support “active ageing” focussing on single risk factor approaches and comprehensive approaches of lifestyle-management as well as on methods for changing unhealthy behaviour.

Lifelong learning as a strategy to improve the level of education, to implement learning concepts for ageing workers and personnel management systems which take the demographic developments into account.

Work organisation and design, where different models, such as flexible working hours, age leadership and the improvement of work organisation and design, showed ways to accommodate the needs of ageing workers.

Outputs

ENWHP Initiatives

With the support of the European Commission, DG Health and Consumer Protection, the ENWHP has carried out a number of important European initiatives over the past decade which have established workplace health promotion (WHP) as a field of action for public health at European and national level.

From 1996 to 2014 ENWHP has produced several publications on policies, health topics, good practices and tools which we feel can be useful for all Workplace Health Promotion stakeholders:

POLICY DOCUMENTS endorsed by all ENWHP members on topics such as Workplace Health Promotion, Success Factors and Good Practice for WHP, Employees with Chronic Illness, Return-to-Work, Mental Health at Work, and Health in Small and Medium-Sized enterprises.

REPORTS on the results of ENWHP joint initiatives and other EU projects where ENWHP participated through some of its members.

PRACTICE gathered from EU companies from different sectors, size, and related to relevant issues for good health management at work.

RECOMMENDATIONS for stakeholders at EU, National, local and enterprise level.

TOOLS for self-evaluation of the quality of WHP interventions and guides.

Welcome to the European Network for Workplace Health Promotion

Meeting Workplace Health Promotion Challenges in Today's Europe

The workplace in Europe has undergone significant changes during the 20 year lifetime of the ENWHP. National economies have grown and declined, employment has waxed and waned and the nature of work and of work contracts has changed significantly for more and more of the European workforce. The demography of the workforce has changed; mental health and stress at work issues are more important, and retaining and returning workers to work has now got a higher profile. Public health programmes now recognise the need to promote health at the workplace, even as the nature of workplaces and employment has changed. Larger numbers of smaller workplaces with a wide range of contractual relationships with workers pose a significant challenge to the delivery of workplace health services (OSH and WHP).

The ENWHP has played its part in responding to the workplace health issues of the day and will continue to do so. However, the time has now come to restructure and redouble our efforts in order to meet the challenges facing the network and the wider workplace.

Changes to the ENWHP

The European Network for Workplace Health Promotion has made the decision to implement changes that will enhance its effectiveness:

	- There will be a shared Secretariat function (former NCO Ireland, NCO UK, NCO Romania) joined by the 2 Co-chairs

and a group of other previous NCOs.

	- The ENWHP was incorporated as a not-for-profit and non-political NGO in October 2016. The new “European

Network for Workplace Health Promotion Foundation” has a new structure encompassing a number of distinct

divisions that reflect the main interests of members and the challenges that WHP faces in the future. This new

structure will help us to pursue new initiatives in the field of WHP over the coming years.

We welcome our colleagues from the old ENWHP into the new structure, and we will be looking to expand membership considerably over the coming period. The ENWHP Foundation will carry forward and build upon the entire heritage of the old ENWHP – Declarations, Guidelines, Models of Good Practice, Toolkits and much else. In addition, it will have access to much other work which has been conducted outside of the old ENWHP by its members which will be made available to the new ENWHP Foundation.

Our new focus will be on the new challenges lying ahead. We hope that you can join us in helping to meet these challenges into the future.
