Directorate General of Health (DGS)
The DGS is part of the Portuguese Ministry of Health. Its main mission is the technical orientation and coordination of health services, especially health promotion and disease prevention among the country's citizens.
The DGS also develops and disseminates comprehensive strategic and technical guidelines for the National Health Service, identifying models of good practice and improving scientific knowledge on to promote better health practices.
The DGS concept of WHP focuses on workers and managers' participation and empowerment to act over health issues, with emphasis on the close interaction between health-related behaviours and setting-related conditions.
The DGS has been the NCO for the ENWHP since 1996.
Several national initiatives have been put in place in partnership with the Regional Health Administrations, Regional Public Health Centres, the National School of Public Health, Occupational and Safety & Health Services and public and private enterprises, including four national conferences and the pilot project "Active Healthy Life at the Workplace" which included innovative approaches to tobacco, alcohol, nutrition, physical activity and stress issues.
The DGS is currently working with the NSPH to promote a national workplace network.
