The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health

The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health runs the ENWHP National Contact Office in Finland. The Institute was established 60 years ago and today its key tasks include the following activities - research, training of occupational health and safety professionals, providing advisory services and disseminating information. The Institute reports to the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. The promotion of health and well-being through the workplace has always been part of the Institute's remit, but during the past ten years a much more proactive approach has been taken. In Finland, the equivalent of the WHP concept is the promotion and maintenance of work ability. This concept defines workplace activities as 'aiming at maintaining the ability to work, including all measures that the employer and the employees as well as the cooperative organisations at the workplace make, in a united effort to promote and support the ability to work and to enhance the functional capacity of all persons active in working life throughout their working careers'.
