The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) announced in April this year their wish to join forces with pan-European organisations and companies to promote the 2008-2009 safety at work campaign.
The European Safety Federation (ESF) was one of the first organisations to respond positively to this appeal. Result of several months of preparation, is the confirmation of the ESF as one of the first nine official campaign partners.
The European campaign focuses on the evaluation of health and safety risks and aims at reducing work-related accidents and illnesses and runs over two years (2008-2009).
The Healthy Workplaces campaign on Risk Assessment is backed by the EU Presidencies, the European Parliament, the European Commission and the European social partners.
Jukka Takala, Director of EU-OSHA said: Risk assessment is a key to preventing accidents and ill health at work. It is a legal obligation throughout Europe and hundreds of thousands of companies assess their risks regularly. But unfortunately figures of accidents and diseases at work show that improvements are still needed, especially in SMEs.
Henk Vanhoutte, Secretary General of ESF, adds: Performing serious and continuous Risk Assessment is the only way to make the workplace safer. It is the basis for any OSH management and action plan in general and for correct selection and use of PPE in particular. This is common sense, not just a legal obligation!
Several activities will be organised by ESF and its members in the coming year.
These will include seminars and workshops for SMEs and advisors of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
All activities will be announced in due time on the websites of the European campaign as well as on the ESF website.
