Workplace Health Promotion and the Improvement of competitiveness in around 120 Romanian companies

Starting in 2009, Romtens Foundation has initiated the implementation of 2 Regional Projects in Romania, projects funded through The Cohesion Fund of the European Union and the Romanian Government. The main theme in both projects is Workplace Health Promotion and the Improvement of competitiveness in around 120 companies from those 2 Romanian Regions: the Center and the Western Region. A total number of 10 counties are included in these 2 projects and from each county a number of around 15 companies have been selected to take part in the activities.

A total number of 24000 employees from both regions will be involved in Workplace Health Promotion Activities and it is expected that the project will bring about a change in attitudes and behavior towards workplace health in all the companies taking part in these challenging initiatives.

The general objectives of these 2 Romanian projects are:

  • To contribute to the development of human resources in Romanian SMEs
  • To introduce the Workplace Health Promotion Methods and Tools as support for employers in developing strategies to promote a healthy workforce in Romanian SMEs

The concrete activities to be developed during 24 months of the implementation include:

  • Training Needs Assessment for managers and employees of around 150 companies settled in the Centre and Western Regions of Romania
  • WHP and OSH Training courses developed for Occupational Health Physicians and Public Health Physicians
  • WHP and Management Courses for Human Resources and OSH managers from the companies selected to be part in the projects
  • A comprehensive WHP Campaign targeting the employees of those 150 companies with the main objectives being to improve the knowledge and exposure the workforce to healthy messages. The main topics of the campaign will be the prevention of occupational diseases and the importance of maintaining occupational health and safety.

A very interesting part of these two projects will be the transnational partnerships developed with the BKK Bundesverband der Betriebskrankenkassen in Germany and with the Work Research Centre from Ireland. These partnerships are expected to transfer new methods and ways of approaching Workplace Health Promotion activities from those companies and organizations in developed economical environments, to companies in a challenging economical environment such as in Romania which are willing to introduce these types of activities into their current programmes.
